Abstract

The prevalence of androgenic alopecia has led to increased dermatological consultations and treatment options. Oral formulations combining minoxidil and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors like dutasteride are gaining popularity. A 22-year-old man with androgenic alopecia, received such a prescription in 2022. After regularly picking up his medication, he complained of dizziness, tachycardia, and palpitations in summer 2023. Investigations revealed low blood pressure and elevated heart rate. Suspecting adverse drug reactions, pharmacists initiated a follow-up. Although the formulation and batch were confirmed to be safe, the potential side effects of minoxidil raised concerns. His dermatologist discontinued minoxidil during a coastal holidays, resolving symptoms. Upon return, when he resumed minoxidil/dutasteride treatment, his symptoms subsided and his monitored blood pressure returned to average. This case highlights the importance of pharmacovigilance and individualized therapy in the management of adverse reactions to alopecia treatments.
