Introduction: Insomnia, one of the most prevalent sleep disorders in the west countries is often a secondary manifestation of other pathologies. Although there are numerous pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options available, the desired treatment outcome is not always achieved. In this context, the aim of this study was to analyze the conditions of use of drugs and phytopharmaceuticals used in the treatment of insomnia.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out with 64 patients recruited in 2 pharmacies in the Community of Madrid. A questionnaire was prepared and distributed among the study participants for them to fill it in voluntarily, autonomously and anonymously through the platform Forms Office.
Results: The study showed a higher participation of women than men (73% vs 27%). Although the mean age was 60 years, a high participation of young people was observed. It should be noted that 65% of the participants used an non-prescription drugs and only 45% of them stated that they had received pharmaceutical advice. Although 98% of the participants had adequate knowledge about their treatment, they were unaware of the potential adverse effects to which they could be exposed.
Conclusions: Many patients with sleep disorders self-medicate with drugs/phytopharmaceuticals without knowing the safety and duration of treatment. Therefore, pharmacist advice during dispensing is essential to ensure the effectiveness and safety of the treatment.
